Tips for Choosing a Remodeler
Most homeowners, at one point or another, will do some remodeling to their home. A portion of this remodeling can be done by the "do-it-yourself" person (replace doors, hang fans, etc.); however, on those projects needing a professional remodeler, the following system of selection should be followed.
- Choose two or three remodelers you wish to solicit designs and bids from. Your choice should be made from the following:
Referrals
- Ask neighbors and friends, etc., for the names of remodelers they have used and have been happy with.
Longevity
- Look for remodelers whose ads you've seen or whose name you've heard of for years.
Consumer Information
- Visit the Registrar of Contractors and the Better Business Bureau to get their input about licensing, bonding, and complaints.
Professional Organizations
- Review the list of Arizona NARI members here.
 Outside Arizona
- Check the national NARI website or call the national office at (847) 298-9200.
- Before setting any appointments with the remodelers, review the following items:
What do you hope to accomplish with this remodeling?
What is your budget for this project, keeping in mind floor coverings, window treatment, and furniture, etc.?
Do you have special needs?
- The initial meeting should take place at your home and cover the following items:

REMEMBER - A professional remodeler will be proud of his past projects and arrange for you to see some of them. The lowest bid is not always the best; there is truth to the statement "You get what you pay for!"
A professional remodeler should instill confidence in you with his ability to provide insightful solutions within budget and on a timely basis.
TIP - It is always a good policy not to do business with family and friends.
